‘This Holy Adventure’

Jen Kershaw – The Soul-Voyagers Network

It was with a shock of sadness, though not with any surprise, that I learned recently of Paul Robertson’s death. However, the paramount feeling was of immense gratitude and appreciation for ways in which he impacted on my life – and indeed on the Soul-voyagers Network – during the last two years of his life.

For those who were not present at last year’s retreat, Paul was a world-famous violinist, leader for over 40 years of the Medici Quartet, one of the most respected ensembles of his generation. But he also had a deep interest in non-ordinary states of consciousness and the power of music to enable progressive access to transpersonal realms.

I first encountered him in the magical environs of Tintern, when he was the chief presenter at a Scientific and Medical Network event which culminated in a superb concert under the stars at Tintern Abbey. The programme included music by Tavener, Part, Gorecki and Britten, and culminated in a performance of ‘Towards Silence’’, the Near-Death-Experience-inspired piece, written by Sir John Tavener for Paul, and with Paul and the Medici Quartet specifically in mind as leading performers. The piece grew out of Sir John and Paul’s deep interest in altered states of consciousness – including the transforming potential of the death experience, of which they both would later have personal experience. Quite remarkable synchronicities – The Divine does indeed have an exquisitely ironical sense of humour!

I was greatly taken, not only with the profundity of the experience communicated, but also by the lightness of touch, the humour, and the ego-puncturing self-deprecation Paul demonstrated as he shared his experiences with us.

He also generously offered concessionary tickets for another imminent concert. It was to take place at the Westminster Synagogue, specifically to promote peace in the Middle East, with music by Mozart and Beethoven, but with pride of place given to the UK premiere of Sir John Tavener’s final work, ‘Scatter Roses over my Tears’, composed for Paul and the Medici. Only recently following its world premiere by them in Austria, this was a most moving occasion – ‘Scatter Roses over my Tears’ is a quotation from a poem by Rumi, and it was read in Farsi by a woman in full Islamic dress – right there in the heart of the synagogue! – and in a week of July 2014 when Palestinean children were being bombed on a beach in Gaza. There has to be another way – and this concert was demonstrating it.

Those who were at the Soul-voyagers Retreat last year will appreciate how influential these experiences were on our programme. Bold as it was, I wrote to Paul and his wife, Chika, who jointly directed the Music Mind Spirit Trust, to ask if they would consider being guest presenters at our retreat – and they accepted!  So – ‘healing in the Middle East’ became our theme, leading to wonderful inclusions of guitarist Sam Muir playing ‘Chant’ by Sir John Tavener, and Sama Mara demonstrating his Islamic take on ‘what music would look like if you could see it’ – a melding of Jewish, Christian and Islamic influences into one rich and satisfying whole. Not only that but, because Chika is Japanese, we incorporated a healing flame of love and forgiveness directly from Hiroshima into our rituals, complete with Japanese ancestral music.

Since then, I have had two opportunities to encounter Paul and Chika again. It was with delight that I learned that Paul was to introduce ‘Towards Silence’ again – this time in my hometown – at the Sherborne Abbey Festival in early May. They arrived on time to attend Sam’s guitar recital, which was also part of the Festival, and we were shocked to see how very ill he looked after the journey from Surrey. But by the next day he had rallied, and gave, as ever, a delightful and self-possessed performance. It was a great pleasure, at lunch afterwards, to be able to introduce Paul to my husband, Richard, also a musician of note. They struck up an instant rapport and I know they would have got on famously had they had an opportunity to get to know one another better. In a future life perhaps?..........

As our retreat approached last year, Paul was in such a precarious state of health that right up to the last moment it was uncertain whether he would actually be able to come. At that time, I enlisted the help of some notable distant healers amongst our Network and – coincidence or no (?!) – Paul was able, not only to be with us, but to talk and play with inspired energy.

After seeing his frail state of health at the Sherborne event, I contacted Sharon Mehdi and Pam again to enlist further support, saying – ‘he is now faced with two events that will tax his strength and energy so he could do with maximum support. On Sat 4th June, he is to give a lecture in the Wigmore Hall in London about the strains and stresses of ensemble playing (and the Medici Quartet will be giving its, most likely, very final performance) and, in the Autumn he very much hopes to be still around for the publication of his book 'Soundscapes of the Soul'. When we spoke this week he felt he was rather unlikely to make both events - but can we make our very best efforts to ensure that he does?’

Pauline Compton-Tough, who had attended the Sherborne event with me, completed the healing quartet at this time.

Sharon responded immediately – ‘His energy is huge and pure.  I can feel it from here.....  The magic and wonder of music is that it never dies.  Every note Paul has ever played will play unto eternity.  I am so honored to be loving Paul and Chika along with you.  It's the only "healing" they, or any of us, truly needs.  Thank you, dear friend, for letting me be part of this holy adventure’.

Paul’s lecture at the Wigmore Hall was, indeed, a great success. It was called ‘Cavatina: The Inner Life of Ensemble’, where he offered his perspective on the inner workings and emotional dynamics of ensemble playing. He was wearing no rose-coloured spectacles; he said that it was a huge challenge because of the intense emotional ambivalences the players experience with the music, and occasionally between themselves – but when it does work it makes all the striving worth-while – as in the transcendental Medici experience of really playing Beethoven’s ‘Cavatina’ – of which he spoke with tears in his eyes.

He had come full circle, returning ‘home’ to the Wigmore Hall the scene of many triumphs in his professional career, and surrounded by the other members of the Medici Quartet who had travelled from various ends of the earth to be there with him.

When I reported on the success of his lecture to Sharon and asked if we could continue to send healing until his book was published, she responded –
of course I will continue sending healing love to Paul and Chika.  As always, it is an honor.  His light keeps getting brighter and brighter. It's quite thrilling.  He appears to be living in two dimensions, if not simultaneously, sequentially and at will.  What his physicality lacks right now is more than made up for by the purity of light he carries.

As ever, Paul was more than sceptical about the ‘purity’ of his ‘light’! But he did send this most appreciative email to us (although he was unaware at that point of Pauline’s involvement)

Dearest Jen, Pam and Sharon,

Blessings upon you for your wonderful prayers, insight and goodwill. I must tell you that I do indeed feel as prepared as possible to leave - in fact impatient to do so.
However I imagine this impatience is a sign that there are still things to complete.
I can hardly tell you how grateful I am for your spiritual support - believe me I will need all the help I can to stand a chance of  making it to a final safe haven. Would it were not so.

If there are others you know of who are sharing and creating this golden web for me please thank them from the bottom of my being.
Much love and gratitude,
Paul
After all: ‘We are the Music, whilst the music lasts’  T. S Eliot

And to this perfect final communication, Sharon responded equally perfectly –

Not to worry, precious one, that safe haven is ready and waiting.  No judgement, just joy.  Love is all there is.  Everything else is just illusion.  All the illusions you have known and loved will disappear like the nothingness they are and voila! -- HOME.

So Paul has not stayed to be present in his increasingly frail and uncomfortable body when his book is published. But this will happen on the 1st of September – Faber and Faber are to publish ‘Soundscapes of the Soul: A Musician’s Journey through Life and Death’. Do buy it if you would like to hear his voice again.

In a very moving interview he was able to give to Christina Patterson, a Sunday Times journalist, in June he was able to whisper ‘My only hope is to be able to leave the world with the lightness of a small bird’

I feel confident that his wish will have been granted.
Bless you, Paul, for all your wonderful legacies to us.                                          Jen Kershaw

P.S. When I shared the draft of the above with Chika, as I did not feel it should be shared, even with Soul-voyagers, without her permission, she sent the following reply :-

Paul did, in actual fact, leave this world with the lightness of a bird! His final tortured breath was replaced by a long peaceful breath at exactly the same moment as ‘Towards Silence’ ended, simultaneously as our daughter Calista finished reading from 3 cards she had written to Paul over the years. Within the sudden still and peaceful atmosphere (I hardly dared breathe!), a blackbird suddenly swooped down to the French doors and sang a most heavenly song as the sun continued to rise. It flew away and the children laughed, as it had been such an utterly charming and unexpected display. As you will see in the book, Paul’s wish was to die to the sound of birdsong and children’s laughter - which he did. I’m sure it will be of no surprise to you that he had, indeed, scripted his own perfect passing!

I had a wonderful sensation that I was receiving a message on the 9th and 10th mornings after his death. He was very excited, ecstatic even, and wanted me to know that he had arrived safely and that it was "more beautiful than anyone could possibly imagine”.
This afternoon I noticed there was something on my bed.  I walked up to it and was amazed to find a lovely, glossy dark feather…perhaps off a blackbird? There were rays of light dancing from an angel-shaped form onto the bed. In between this light and the feather were diamond-shaped rays of flashing sunlight. I’m not even sure how a bird would have got into the room to leave a feather…

And when I contacted her, yet again, to ask if this could be shared, she added :-

Thank you - I would be honoured and grateful if you would like to pass on any messages from Paul, via us, to fellow friends and dear, kindred spirits at Soul-voyagers.  I should add that his initial message began with, 'I am safely ensconced!'

I also wanted to thank and let the Quartet of Healers know, as well, that Sharon's words were very comforting to Paul and our family whilst caring for him. He was, indeed, inhabiting both domains and his light was becoming purer and brighter.

I still can't work out how a bird would have got into the bedroom to leave a feather...

As a final P.S. you might like to know that, although it could not actually explain how a blackbird feather might have made its way onto Chika’s pillow, she was greatly comforted when I was able to tell her that Blackbird, in Druid/Celtic shamanic mythology, is the Gateway bird to the Otherworld.........

Flying Beyond Time – Produced by Jen Kershaw

The Making of the CD of The Birds who Flew Beyond Time

I did not consciously set out to produce a CD to sell – but here it is!  You may be interested in the process by which it emerged. Click here to view the item, or read on...

‘The Birds who Flew beyond Time’ has been out of print for some time, but respect for Anne Baring’s other writing led me to track down a copy, via the Internet, in a bookshop in Chicago. It would be hard to exaggerate the profound impact made on me by the combination of her inspired text and the luminous illustrations of Thetis Blacker. I couldn’t believe that this remarkable publication was out of print! Here was a version of THE human story – the story of Individuation, or Awakening, or Enlightenment, or Self-Realisation – and told in an irresistibly compelling form, accessible and simple without being simplistic yet, because of its symbolic richness, able to convey the complexity of life’s challenges.

I was seized with an enthusiasm to share my wonderful discovery – but how? The logistics were quite complicated.  The story is quite long – and irreducible. I only had one copy – which I was reluctant to let out of my hands!  If I did enthuse people about it, they were unlikely to be able to get hold of it.........And yet, I could not let go of the almost missionary zeal that had inspired me to tell people about it.  So where to go from here?

I work as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist – work which involves CPD - continuous professional development – so, although I ‘qualified’ many year ago I have continued to learn from a number of exceptional teachers.  Chief amongst these has been Roger Woolger, whose deep Memory Process has evolved as the most profound and comprehensive healing process for transforming mind, body and spirit that I have experienced.  Each year a group of ‘Woolger Graduates’ has a reunion – a residential healing retreat during which we take our work forward, facilitated and supported by each other.  It occurred to me that my gift to the group this year could be a reading of this precious story. I knew they would appreciate it.

I arrived clutching the book eagerly, and said I hoped to read it to them.  But, somehow, it didn’t quite happen. Several other things had been planned and therefore took priority, somehow the time and space was not there for my reading, and I returned home without giving it. However, nothing daunted, it occurred to me that I could record the story and send copies to those who had been there, as a memento of a special week.

The very process of making the recording, however, caused my plan to evolve. Dave Green in Ilminster agreed to do the recording for me. He has good equipment, but it is set up, cottage-industry-style, in a small terraced cottage. I explained that I just wanted to make a few CDs of the story for friends.

But we happened to make the recording on the day the G-8 leaders met at Gleneagles – on Wed the 6th of July, 2005. As I read, Dave was getting visibly more moved and excited – he loved the story, was deeply struck by the relevance of its themes to the G-8 meeting, was encouraging about the qualities of my reading (about which I’d been apologetically doubtful and hesitant beforehand) and was encouraging me to put it out ‘commercially’. This could be the start of something BIG! – he kept saying!

I took this with more than a pinch of salt. ‘Celebrities’ commonly do such things – and I am certainly not one of those!  But it did just make me think – it might be possible to take it forward as a fund-raising venture, so that any profits could be given to environmental or developmental organisations – those working constructively to tackle poverty or environmental degradation of the kind the G-8 were discussing, and about which so many thousands of people were demonstrating that week.

Then the very next day – the terrorist bombings in London, in the name of Islam.  WHAT?!  That people, in the name of Allah – whose very name is not invoked by the Faithful without the addition of ‘The Compassionate, The Merciful’ – should be blowing up innocent travellers going about their business?  What has confused these poor misguided individuals so completely that they can perpetrate such wrongs in a holy name? And how paradoxical that I should have been engaged that very week in recording a wise and constructive Sufi story, Sufism being the mystical ‘wing’ of Islam. It further confirmed and intensified my desire to bring the story to people’s attention.

It took a little time to edit and reproduce the CDs, and to make a striking cover with Thetis Blacker’s splendid Hoopoe, but I managed to post them off to my fellow Woolger Graduates before setting off – perhaps this is not without significance – for a bird-watching expedition to the Andes and Amazon of Ecuador, with my husband who is passionate about the birds of the ‘visible’ world! Of course it is ‘not without significance’!  It is precisely because I have had the great good fortune to travel regularly in the course of the last 25 years into remote and unspoilt parts of the Americas, Africa and Asia, accumulating in the process an astonishing bird-list of about 3,500 species, that I can assert, from personal experience, that we live in a breathtakingly beautiful planet, and that we must find ways to care for it better. This is humanity’s prime responsibility, and what distinguishes us from all other species.

On my return from Ecuador, I was welcomed by people’s reactions to the CD – on the whole positive about the story and the reading, but with some reservations about the technical short-comings of the editing, and definite disquiet about Dave’s heavy breathing! Altogether, I did feel encouraged, but also felt it necessary to iron out some of the glitches, so I returned to Dave and we made a rather more polished version.

No doubt those who are more familiar with publishing and less naive about copyright protocols will already be chorusing – what does she think she is doing?!  But, because I had no thought of making money, it wasn’t until I was preparing to write to Anne Baring and Thetis Blacker to request permission to take the project further, that it dawned on me that I had gone about it in all the wrong order! ‘Permission in writing from the publisher’ should have been received prior to any reproduction – whether recording or photocopying. Consternation!  And what to do now?! Visions of crippling fines – even a spell in prison – flitted through my nightmares...........

In the event, however, I decided to confess my crimes in full, apologise, and throw myself on their mercy.  To their credit, they responded with the utmost generosity and, although saying that I had ‘certainly jumped the gun’ in distributing the CD without permission, they both agreed to allow me to proceed, and to waive copyright fees if it was to be sold for an environmental charity. My fervent hope is that the distribution of this CD may generate such a demand for the republication of the book that, in the fullness of time, they will both be well rewarded.

I don’t have to be a ‘celebrity’ to be able to appreciate being able to make my voice heard, speaking up for what I regard as important.  Having recently become a grandmother for the first time, what is important for me has swung into sharper focus and is ablaze with light.  I would like my grand daughter, now just approaching her first birthday, to inherit a ‘Better World’ – in the sense envisaged by Bob Geldof and others when they distributed, free, ‘The Rough Guide to a Better World’ at the time of the G-8 summit. The charity, Bird-life International, whose slogan is ‘working together for birds and people’, seems to me to operate according to these principles, and to be truly a worldwide alliance of conservation organisations. For further information, see their website – www.birdlife.org – and I would like the proceeds of any sales of this CD to help take their work forward.

If you feel inspired by this story, please buy lots of copies as presents for others, please share it with your children and grand-children, please send your copy to friends in other countries and other cultures – it is a universal story – therapists, please pass it on to your clients, teachers to your pupils, and, perhaps, deluge, Amnesty-like, with copies, those who do not seem to be aware of its messages – certain world leaders, heads of global corporations, anyone whose religious beliefs make them intolerant rather than tolerant – so that, by some creeping miracle, they, too, may begin to hear.

Recently, I had recommended to me by a dear friend, a delightful little book by Sharon Mehdi. It’s called ‘The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering’, and sub-titled ‘For anyone who thinks she can’t save the world’. Let us trust ourselves and each other, join hands, and just do it!

POSTSCRIPT

Since the above was written, not only has a considerable sum been donated to Bird-Life International, but ‘The Birds who Flew beyond Time’ is now in print again

I would like to acknowledge the great generosity of Anne Baring in allowing me to make copies of the CD available for sale on this website and draw your attention to  her own website, where copies of the book may now be ordered –  www.annebaring.com

Amidst The Chaos, Seeds Of Hope: The United Nations, the Sustainable Development Goals, And World Good Will

Alex Ratcliffe Teacher, writer, blogger

In recent times, the word “united”, what it stands for and the institutions it represents, have endured a serious body blow. Organizations and ideals I used to learn about and pledge allegiance to as a kid, support as a young adult and teach about as an educator, including the “United” States of America and a “United” Europe (EU), are today appearing anything but. Abraham Lincoln addressed this situation in 1858 warning that, “A house divided against itself cannot stand”. In view of current events, that house would seem to stand very much in tatters.

All the more reason, perhaps, to believe or hope that the only way, from here, must surely be up. But how? How to change that trajectory?

I don’t want to sound like a whining child (although Rodney King is worth quoting, “Can we all get along?” and he was no child) whilst history clearly illustrates all the reasons why we can’t (get along). And yet, and yet.

Just days before the election, on 28 October 2016, I attended a seminar amidst the salubrious surroundings of the Palais des Nations, Geneva, “the capital of peace and freedom”. I say ‘salubrious’ (health-giving, pleasant, beneficial, luxurious) because that is what this whole area of Geneva is, though a city of contrasts. Home to the International Red Cross, more than 200 international organizations, and the United Nations, the giant “Broken Chair” stands opposite the entrance of the UN, reminding us that ‘getting along’ is no easy task. And yet the whole area hums with the intent to work together and to heal, even amidst the chaos, competition, selfish political agendas, and all the concomitant drawbacks inherent within each organization.

The topic of the seminar, which attracted 150 people from a wide range of backgrounds, professions and nationalities, was: “World Good Will, Ethical Responsibility and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations”. This UN initiative, the SDG’s, and its 17 aspirational goals which came into effect early this year, are “a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity”. They provide targets for all countries to adopt in order to tackle our mounting global problems including poverty, climate change, inequality, international conflict, and the guidelines to address them now. These goals for the future are officially known as “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

In view of the expansion of industrialization and the exponential growth of the population, we know that it is impossible for the present use and abuse of the environment and the earth’s resources to continue as it is without disastrous results. As the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said, “There is no Plan B, because there is no Planet B”.

The keynote of the seminar in Geneva was that we can make development sustainable, but it requires global cooperation and global accountability, the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike to recognize the urgency and put plans in place with an eye to future generations. But, it was emphasized, this action implies the need for social and political will, and behind that is, and must be, a willingness for the greater good as opposed to individual agendas.
Is this a fantasy? I think not. Nothing happens without wanting and willing, not even your morning coffee; it’s merely a matter of which direction that ‘will’ takes us. And, is it for the greater good? (The morning coffee probably is.) And Conflict Resolution 101 teaches that first, both parties have to want to sit down at the table.

So I was reminded at this seminar, in the introductory talk, of something we will never see on the front pages: that Good Will is one of the most basic, better qualities of the human being, “a great untapped resource at the heart of every community”. Its power remains “largely unrecognized” although it is in fact “the thoughtful planned action of networks of goodwill that is driving the response to all the problems of our age.... People of goodwill from all cultures are creating a new world where sharing, cooperation and right relations are taking root and spreading”. It was stated: “Never before in the history of the planet has goodwill been so active.”. Really? A unique thought for today, but one worthy of consideration.

In spite of the regressive politics of the alt-right striking fear in our hearts daily, consider the work of tens of thousands of charitable, international and worthy organizations large and small composed of millions of individuals whose driving force is the will-to-good, progressive social change, a willingness to ‘get along’, and a better life for us individually and collectively (I toss in here a shout -out for the unsung heroes of the NHS who, to my mind, deserve saint-status for the dedicated work they perform daily under the adverse conditions they endure).

Psychological studies, and all institutions working for rehabilitation and reformation, recognize that we can train and direct our will. In the process, we can continue to hopefully and usefully channel this innate goodwill into groups, actions and systems, and support of organizations, such as the United Nations, with all its failures and frailties, which exist as a format for manifesting the goodwill of us all. With all its imperfections, there is as yet no other organization of such stature as, for example, the UN, to which the world can more hopefully turn, with its sustainable development goals, its innumerable initiatives, and its founding Charter stating the intent of “We the peoples ...to live together in peace”.

To bring it home: I am reminded of the unknown gentleman who found my entire set of lost house and car keys in the road, and bothered to turn them in to the local library, seeing a small library tag on the ring, in the off chance they could locate me, thus ending my hours of frantic search. I don’t think I’m being Pollyanna when I say, we need some good news, and the good news is that this side of human nature is still alive and well and manifesting in the millions, and in fact making its voice heard louder and clearer in the wilderness, in innumerable ways and innumerable forms, starting with the man on the street (literally) and spreading its way across the world in so many ways.
What can we do? We can will our time, money and attention towards this, this quality in human nature, in our own natures, in these institutions, and the untold and unsung millions working for the greater good. Thus, we and our children may yet see the time when the phoenix rises from the ashes. So, do take that thought into your day with your morning coffee. Where there’s a will, we may still find the way.

The Cosmic Hologram:
In-formation at the Centre of Creation

by Jude Currivan PhD

Inner Traditions (March 2017)
ISBN 978-1-62055-660-3

Reveals Scientific Evidence that
Reality Is Information, Mind Is Matter,

and
Consciousness Isn’t Something We Have,
It’s What We and the
Whole World ARE

The Cosmic Hologram: ln-formation at the Centre of Creation by cosmologist Jude Currivan Ph.D. transforms our understanding of the entire Universe, and crucially, at the level of our everyday lives. It describes how the latest scientific discoveries across many fields of study show that the information that upholds our technologies is exactly the same as universal in-formation that is all we call physical reality.

Exploring how our Universe is in-formed and holographically manifested, It explains how, for the first time, quantum and relativity theories can be reconciled by considering energy-matter and space-time as complementary expressions of information, and how the cosmic hologram in-forms the true origin of species.

It explains how the fractal in-formational patterns that guide behaviour at the atomic level also guide the structure of galactic clusters in space. It demonstrates how the in-formational relationships that underlie earthquakes are the same as those that play out during human conflicts. It shows how cities grow in the same in-formational ways that galaxies evolve, and how the dynamic in-formational forms that pervade ecosystems are identical to the informational structures of the Internet and our social behaviours.

Describing experimental evidence that information is physically real, it explores how consciousness connects us to the many interconnected layers of universal in-formation, making us both manifestations, and co-creators, of the cosmic hologram of reality.

Vitally, it reveals that we are microcosmic co-creators of the innate intelligence of our Universe that exists and evolves as a coherent entity; a finite thought in the infinite mind of the Cosmos. Aligning scientifically based evidence with universal spiritual experience, the book serves to clarify our understanding and awareness of reality as a unified whole. This Whole WorId-View has the power to heal our fragmented perspectives, and so radically change our collective behaviours, with the potential to transform the challenges of our global emergency into the emergence of our conscious evolution.

“Dr Currivan’s brilliant synthesis incorporating consciousness as a fundamental element comprising the fabric of the Universe provides a bold and hopeful vision for the future of human civilization-and how each of us can fully participate as co-creators of the world to come”.
Bruce H. Lipton, PhD, Stem cell biologist and bestselling author of The Biology of Belief, Spontaneous Evolution (with Steve Bhaerman) and The Honeymoon Effect.

“The Cosmic Hologram is a wonderfully important and very wise book. It is likely that the issues Dr. Jude Currivan addresses will determine our fate as a viable species on this particular planet”.

'A Song of the Empire'
by John Mathews

Last, but by no means least, I would like to acknowledge the honour I feel in being allowed to include here a remarkable poem written by John Matthews. He holds the copyright but has given me permission to print it here.

It was written ‘under the influence’ of Charles Williams, the ‘Third Inkling’ – in other words, one of the literary trio of friends in Oxford that also included J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis. He wrote prose and plays, but perhaps his most original poetic achievement is his cycle on the Arthurian legend, also a lifetime study for John Matthews. The titles included ‘Taliessin through Logres’ (1938) and ‘The Region of the Summer Stars’ (1944).

At the recent workshop I attended, John described the astonishing origin of this work. In July 1988 he attended a study group on Charles Williams, in the course of which he ‘doodled’ – wrote what he felt at the time were random lines, which came to him as he tuned into Charles Williams, his world-view, and the resonance of his poetry. They were then put away amongst his notes and not looked at again during the intervening nearly thirty years......

But in preparing to speak on Charles Williams himself, he came across them again, perceived them to be more meaningful and prophetic than he had ever consciously intended, and shared them with us – to very powerful effect.

It felt, at the time, as though they were words whose time had come – even that they had been lying in wait for this moment.

You can judge for yourselves.......

'A Song of the Empire'
(For GK and for CW)

Between the pages of the Wood, the stages
of the Kingdom rise. Masked is the glory;
the story, told. We, who stand at the gate,
wait but the Word, the gesture
complete from the hands of the Emperor
who stands at the head of the turning stair.

The masks of the empire remain;
they train the dream
to spell out the facts of the acts
of Rome. Until the dreams
of the Company turn
again to the journey,
under the auspices of the Summer Stars,
back to the faces of Camelot and Carbonek.

Heard in the occiput of Logres
the Word of the mage extends
forward and downward into the world
which, having heard, lets fall
the dream and the vision of transfigured Time.
There, caught up, transformed, the mirrors
turn and burn and shine
into the darkness beyond the World.

Shapes of longing and belonging
to the patterns of the Acts of Being
found in the round archives
of the state of things-to-be,
shadow forth the making of earth.
Taliesin saw, in the shadow,
a new beginning, the beasts and the burdens
turned to gifts in the journey of the Wood and the World.
When desire flamed in the ire of being
light glowed on the face of the beloved;
The King’s poet merged the dreams that urged
a fruitful union of spirit and flesh.

Thus we are come, at last, past
the gate of the Wood, under the shadow
of Camelot in the Empire’s shape
to the mysteries of the Graal;
the Cup flames in the heart and the mind;
the subtle changes of King and kind
Shapes of soul in the flesh of Broceliande.

The shadow of the Graal, the Cup
that is sought and the Cup that seeks
brought by the hands of the Holy Spirit
into the lands of human endeavour
showed by its light where Arthur reigned,
where the Table stood
as the Song of Logres echoed in the Wood,
and all that was to be was told
in the manner of song, in the matter of mind.

In the habit of truth
the gesture of acceptance pulls us,
to adore the rule, mounts
through the founts and funnels,
the vessels of the realms of blood,
and sings, springs in our hearts,
heads, souls, the song of the King’s Poet’s joy.
Welcomed in the sanctity of space
the Queen blends, sends forth
her blessing. All time trembles.
Logres comes again, thrusting
through the trusting gate of the soul.

We come to the light of the Graal;
are changed, unmade,
woefully arrayed; are caught
up in the heavenly moment,
the general movement of all things
towards the infinite and perfect whole.

In a high chamber, the King trembled,
saw before him the cherubim flame.
Joy burned away his last forgetting
as he moved to be one with the Company’s infinite heart.
Hope leapt in the hearts and heads
of the Seekers of Logres;
truth burned in the mind
like an incandescent cloud;
the trees bowed their heads
as the Hands deployed
the mysteries and joys
of the true act the Seekers enjoined.

The Graal sang from the depths of space
an ancient and holy blessing
that rang in the Hallows of the Kingdom’s heart.
